General questions

The Taranaki Health Foundation is a charitable organisation founded in 1998 in partnership with the Taranaki District Health Board.

Registered chairtity number: CC35089

The Taranaki Health Foundation's purpose is to support the development of enhanced healthcare services, for all people within Taranaki. We are dedicated to developing enhanced healthcare services for the region.

The Taranaki Health Foundation runs on a very tight budget. However, as with any business, there are expenses that can't be avoided. Where possible we work with our Operational Partners to provide services in-kind or at a reduced rate. Any remaining expenses are covered by budget from Te Whatu Ora Taranaki.

100% of our donations are spent on project to enhance public healthcare in Taranaki. No donation money is spent on operational expenses.

Te Whatu Ora funds a certain level of healthcare based on the region’s population. Most of that funding goes into staffing and operational costs. That leaves a little left over for new equipment or providing services beyond what the hospital is meant to provide based on its size and the population it serves.

Donations can be made either online or through direct bank transfers.

New East Wing Building

The New East Wing Building (NEWB) is a The 20,000 square matre facility being built at Taranaki Base Hospital that will provide new facilities for Emergency, ICU, Radiology, Maternity and Neonatal.

NEWB is the second stage of a long-term development plan for Taranaki Base Hospital. The first stage saw the completion of the Acute Services Building in 2013. This project is part of an upgrade to critical site wide infrastructure, which also includes Te Huhi Raupō Renal Unit, a new Energy Centre, and the development of the Taranaki Cancer Care Centre.

Central Government has given Taranaki $400 mllion of funding for this ddevelopment. This is incredibly generous and will provide us with the essential infrastructure needed to provide a standard level of care. But we believe Taranaki deserves the best level of care. This is why we are fundraising an additional $25 million to provide enhancements to both equipment and services and ensure more people have local access to the level of care they need.

Taranaki Cancer Care Centre

The Taranaki Cancer Care Centre will be a stand-alone facility providing holistic cancer treatment in Taranaki. It will include services for radiotherapy, chemotherapy and haematology, as well as offer comfortable spaces for consultations and education as well as suitable whānau facilities.

Cancer care services in Taranaki are currently limited to chemotherapy and haematology services. This means anyone requiring radiotherapy as part of their treatment will need to travel to Palmerston North. The Taranaki Cancer Care Centre will include a Linear Accelerator (LINAC), which will be able to provide radiotherapy treatment for 80% of patients in Taranaki that require it.

A full suite of cancer treatment services in a dedicated building will mean patients receive a more efficient, local service, reducing their impact on their lives and support network.

Central Government has given Taranaki $35.5 million to fund this development. This is incredibly generous and will provide us with the essential infrastructure needed to provide cancer care services and ensure the LINAC is provided to the region. Additional funds raised by Taranaki Health Foundation will provide enhancements - such as more comfortable chemotherapy chairs, gardens and artwork for a more pleasant environment and reducing the impact on the rest of the hospital’s budgets.
